Olympic Boxer Provides Inspiration To OBA’s Students

Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy in Runcorn recently held its fourth Sky Sports Living for Sport day and was incredibly lucky to have Olympic boxer, Courtney Fry, in to work with and inspire students.

Courtney competed in the Kuala Lumpar Commonwealth games, where he won Gold in the light heavyweight category and he also competed in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Courtney delivered a 3 hour session to a group of Year 10 Sports Leaders who all developed their boxing skills mental agility throughout the day. In addition, they participated in and led games that helped them develop their communication and leadership skills. Courtney inspired the students even more, when he spoke about the path he had followed, describing then determination and hard work required to achieve his success.

In the afternoon, Courtney worked with other students as a reward for their sporting achievements throughout the year. All the boys and girls involved enjoyed developing their boxing technique and had the chance to participate in some of the drills and games Courtney does himself in practice. Sparring with each other, they soon learnt that quick reactions and a clear focus are so important in boxing.

Miss Z. Porschke, PE Teacher said:
"The students were buzzing with excitement after working with Courtney and they learnt so much from him. They were also very excited to get his autograph. I think we have some budding boxing stars of the future here in OBA."
