Following OBA’s celebration of World Book Day, students from across the academy who have been recognised for achieving excellence in English spent the day doing a range of creative writing activities with local and nationally acclaimed writer, Jon Mayhew, author of ‘Mortlock’ and many other successful titles.
After learning a variety of skills and techniques, students used a range of resources such as iPads and other multimedia facilities to create digital eBooks. Jon gave the students the benefit of his professional eye, helping them to improve and add to their own short stories. After the session, Jon contacted the Academy to express how impressed he had been with the students involved.
OBA was also very excited to welcome five Liverpool FC Academy players to help launch our ‘AUDE Project’ which promotes the skills of reading and writing at a higher level. The players who read alongside Yr7 students, encouraging and motivating them were Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent, Daniel Trickett-Smith, Conor Randall and Daniel Cleary.
Ms. A. Richards, teacher of English, said “It is amazing how focused the students were throughout both projects. So many young people look up to celebrities these days as role models. Our students listened intently to their advice and tried new techniques to develop their skills further. They were very excited to meet the LFC Academy football players who inspired and encouraged them to keep their ‘eye on the ball’ with regard to some of the most recently released exciting novels!”
