OBA Sixth Form student secures place at university to study medicine and surgery

The future Dr Hamido Desouki

With an excellent set of A Level results this summer, OBA Sixth Form has secured their first student to successfully gain a place at university to study medicine & surgery, with the prospect of becoming a doctor on completion of their studies.   Engy Hamido Desouki, joined OBA in 2015 and since then has had a clear vision for her future.  Although coming to the UK and not speaking English as her first language, Engy fully embraced her education at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy and took every opportunity provided to her.

Engy completed her 7 year journey at OBA by securing a place at OBA Sixth Form, following our OBA Scholars programme – Pre Med route.  As part of this programme Engy completed the Extended Project Qualification where she achieved a Grade A. This programme supports students in ensuring they have the experience and guidance to make the choice about which Medicine or Dentistry course they wish to choose and at which university. Our Pre Med programme enables students like Engy, to take advantage of many opportunities which Engy greatly welcomed.

  • UCAT/BMAT support with a tutor and free online access to resources
  • Work experience in local hospitals, care homes and health related job roles
  • Visits to universities to support applications to these courses
  • First aid courses provided through the Sixth Form
  • Medical Summer Schools at many universities
  • Mock interviews
  • Access to Sutton Trust and Nuffield Bursary

Not only did Engy fully embrace the opportunities outlined above she also took advantage of:

  • Mentorship with Facebook
  • Mentorship by a first-year doctor
  • Attending online surgeries
  • Working with Liverpool Scholars
  • Volunteering with charities

Scott Fenner, Assistant Principal – Head of Sixth Form at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy said:

“I am extremely proud of Engy in securing her place studying medicine at university.  Engy may have had a clear vision of what she wanted for her future but this has not come without many hurdles that could have stopped this from becoming reality.  Mrs Diamond has mentored Engy throughout her time at OBA Sixth Form, providing support, guidance and the many opportunities to ensure she was able to get to her chosen destination.  Engy has displayed excellent resilience, independence and maturity  throughout her education and has been the model Sixth Form student we expect at OBA.  Engy’s sheer determination to succeed in her chosen career path has been the key ingredient to her success, taking on the many opportunities provided to her to make her stand out over other applicants for her chosen course. As an extremely competitive chosen career pathway, Engy has managed to secure her place through all of the extra-curricular activities that she undertook. Engy is very modest with her ability and determination, however I know she is already offering her support to work with our future medic applicants during her time at university.  I would like to personally wish Engy every success and look forward to seeing her achieve her dreams – well done Engy!”

Kelly Diamond, Assistant Head of Sixth Form – Head of Year 13 at Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy said: “I could not be any prouder of Engy, she has gone above and beyond of what I could have ever hoped for her. I have had the pleasure of teaching Engy since she joined OBA in Year 7 and her exemplary effort, attitude and resilience was evident even then. When Engy was in Year 10, I began mentoring her on a pathway, one step at a time, with our end goal of her becoming Dr Hamido-Desouki. Engy has been extremely focused, even during unprecedented times and has managed to fully submerge her efforts into gaining a place at an extremely competitive course. With the fantastic support of her family, she will now go onto study at Lancaster University where she has even been offered a scholarship to support her studies. I would like to personally thank Engy for trusting me with this process and I am very proud of all that she has accomplished and will accomplish in the future.

I would like to thank Mrs Diamond, Mr Fenner and the school as a whole for providing me with continued support since day one. Being a doctor has always been a dream of mine; especially at Lancaster University which meant that I had to put a lot of effort and determination in order to get to where I am today. I’m hoping to encourage other students to do as much as they possibly could to get to where they want to be and to continue making my school proud in the future.

Mr Desouki & Mrs Designoribus (Engy’s parents) :

Nothing can describe the happiness we are in after our daughter secured her place at Lancaster University to study medicine.  We have seen her dream come true despite all the difficulties and challenges that surrounded it. Since the first day of Engy’s entry into OBA, we have been keen to provide her with full support so that she can achieve her dream. We are very proud of our daughter and her wonderful efforts during her 7 academic years and we thank OBA for providing wonderful support to our daughter throughout her study journey.
