Vehicle Technology

Subject Overview

You will work on a variety of vehicle set ups and learn about many aspects of vehicle technology. Course modules include health and safety, light vehicle maintenance, removing and refitting components, engine system principles, layout and operation of vehicle systems and the maintenance of wheels, tyres, steering and suspension systems.


Staff

Mr Thornhill is our excellent Vehicle Technology teacher. He has many different qualifications related to Vehicle Technology such as Automotive Body and paint Body Repair prior to joining OBA he worked for Merseyside police as a vehicle technician maintaining a vast variety of police vehicles ensuring they would perform to their best ability!

Facilities

On the Vehicle technology course students will have access to an extensive range of tools and equipment in both the workshops and garage learning environments to support their study of Vehicle Technology. 

KS4 

The main aims of this qualification are to:

•provide opportunities for learners and employees to achieve a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification.

•provide opportunities for learners to prepare for entry into employment, to work towards the achievement of an apprenticeship in the sector or to progress to further education vocational qualifications.

KS4 

This is a two year course which covers six units, including core units that investigate a range of different areas in the Vehicle Technology sector. Students will learn about: the servicing of a vehicle, routine safety checks, tyre and exhaust fitting techniques, the engine and transmission and vehicle maintenance techniques.

The learner will be expected to carry out practical work as well as classroom underpinning knowledge to support the practical aspect of this type of work

For the Subsidiary Diploma you will study six units which include the following:

Unit 1: Operation of vehicle chassis systems

Unit 2: Vehicle Engine Principles, Operation, Service and Repair

Unit 3: Vehicle System Fault Diagnosis and Rectification

Unit 12: Operation and Maintenance of Light Vehicle Transmission Systems

Unit 14: Light Vehicle Suspension, Steering and Braking Systems

Unit 18: Mathematics for Engineering Technicians

Support

There are a range of support sessions that run at lunchtime and after school for pupils in all of the three key stages. Additional support classes are available for all students before they sit GCSE/ Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. Students can also drop in during enrichment time for homework support for each key stage that are supervised by subject specialists.
