Subject Overview

Mathematics is the means of looking at the patterns that make up our world and the intricate and beautiful ways in which they are constructed and realised. Numeracy is the means of making that knowledge useful.

Mathematics contributes to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ abilities to calculate; to reason logically, algebraically, and geometrically; to solve problems and to handle data.

At Key Stage 3 we follow the active learn scheme of work created by Pearson. Written specifically to develop a mastery of skills to fully prepare students for the demands of GCSE.

We focus on embedding key numeracy skills and the implication of them in real life situation.

At Key Stage 4 we follow the Pearson scheme of learning which is written specifically for the GCSE 9-1 Maths specification and take an innovative mastery approach to tackle the increase in demand. We look to build fluency and nurture confidence in Maths while also focusing on problem-solving and reasoning throughout.

Enrichment is run for all year groups in Maths as well as for students from local Primary schools. Year 11 are given 2 hours a week after school.

Online support from both the Mathswatch and Pixl websites. These offer students the opportunity to access online lessons and practice questions that are instantly assessed and fed back.

Pinpoint learning is an online tool that gives KS4 students detailed feedback of strengths and weaknesses. They are then directed to support both in lessons and at home to accelerate their progress.
