History

Subject Overview

The educational purpose of Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy is to make sure that regardless of starting point, situation or background, our provision allows students to go on to university or gain a successful career to live a life full of choice and opportunity. History can make this happen through a range of ways: as it grants them a deeper understanding of the political, cultural and social makings of the modern world and develops students’ ability to critically think about different sources, events and individuals, even so far as to apply this to their prospective and positive futures. The History curriculum is all about fostering a passion and curiosity for the discipline, whereby the students broaden their knowledge of key events and turning points, illuminating how History has shaped our current landscape today. Students should always be given the opportunity to question and analyse stimulating and challenging concepts and debates, and that is studied through a chronological curriculum of British History that focuses on the turning points from the Romans to the Modern World, as well as wider, more global turning points, such as the Holocaust and Civil Rights. When students finish their History journey with our academy, they have all been encouraged to tackle a historical narrative that provides a depth and breadth to their historical and political place in the world, ready to enthusiastically move on to their next stage in life

Facilities

Pupils can access an extensive range of wider reading materials in the History department from primary sources to historical interpretation which supplements their study of History.  The History department classrooms are equipped with a computer and an interactive whiteboard, with departmental laptops and I-pads used to develop learning in the classroom and extend the student ability to be independent and research-led historians.

KS4 

The key stage four History curriculum revolves around the new GCSE 9-1 Edexcel specification:

Year 10: Weimar and Nazi Germany & Superpower Relations

Year 11: Early Elizabethan England & Crime and Punishment through Time

Students will be developing exam skills and revision techniques to improve their understanding.

KS5 

The key stage five curriculum revolves around the Edexcel specification and is taught over the two year period, focusing on:

Year 12: Britain, 1605-1701 and Russia in Revolution, 1894-1924

Year 13: Civil rights and race relations in the USA, 1850–2009 and a coursework component

Enrichment

There are a range of support sessions that run after school for pupils in all of the three key stages. Additional revision enrichment classes are available for all students before they sit GCSE, with these available for all key stage four students and Advanced Level examinations, both year twelve and thirteen. For key stage three, the department runs a history club that promotes a love of history and engages those students into history in creative and fun ways.

Support

The History department is very open with its support for students. If a student is in need of support then there are a range of support available. Besides the additional revision classes which are available for all students in their GCSE and Advanced Level exam classes, there are also opportunities for break and lunch times for students to come and work in with teachers on a 1-2-1 or small group basis. The History teachers are always prepared to support.
