Hair & Beauty
Learners will study safe and healthy working practices and the history and science of hair and beauty. They will learn about communication and client care and become familiar with salon business systems and processes within the hair and beauty sector. They will explore skin care and make-up, hair care and styling and hand care and nail art.
Learners will develop the following skills which will support their progress to further study:
- independent enquiry
- creative thinking
- reflective learning
- team working
- effective participation
Both Technical awards and GCSEs will complement this qualification. GCSEs in maths and English are ideal since they can be applied in the context of hair and beauty. Science and business-related qualifications will also complement this qualification.
Head of department Mrs Finigan comes from an Industry background, working as a Hairdresser and salon manager for several years before leading into a teaching career. She is able to use this experience to inform her teaching style in a very practical way for her students.
Miss Farrelly Beauty teacher comes from also an industry background with a vast amount of experience within spa’s and beauty salon before moving into a teaching career were she is able to pass on her knowledge to her students which motivates and shows different career opportunities.
Staff within the Hair and Beauty department are inspiring to all our learners, still in the industry themselves with their own fully equipped salons at home. Always learning new and latest techniques due to strong ongoing professional development within the industry.

In the Hair and Beauty department we are fortunate to have experienced staff with a wide range of skills from industry backgrounds. Their diverse skills enrich teaching styles as well as inspiring our students and encourage and motivate them into different careers within Hair and Beauty. The department has Full equipped Hairdressing salon and Beauty salon within the academy.
Beauty: This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior therapist including, mandatory units covering the following: facial skincare, waxing, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, manicure, pedicure, client care and health and safety. You will also have the opportunity to further develop your understanding and skills by completing a number of optional specialist units which include: the application of tanning techniques and applying make-up. The structure of this qualification provides you with the flexibility to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills required to become a junior beauty therapist.
Hair: This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior stylist including, mandatory units covering the following: health and safety, Shampooing, colouring, dressing, cutting, reception. You will also have the opportunity to further develop your understanding and skills by completing a number of optional specialist units which include: the application of tanning techniques and applying make-up. The structure of this qualification provides you with the flexibility to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills required to become a junior beauty therapist.
There are a range of support sessions that run at lunchtime and after school for pupils in key stages 4 and 5. Additional revision and coursework classes are available for all students before they sit online exams in KS5. There are also a range of homework support clubs for key stage 4 that are supervised.
We always offer extra help and support were needed in classes and out of the classroom, e.g. enrichments.
