Careers Education Information and Guidance at OBA (CEIAG)

Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy is committed to providing the best possible Careers Education Information and Guidance (CEIAG) for all students, from Year 7 to Year 13.   We ensure students have access to impartial careers advice and have access to employers who can help them consider their future options.

OBA’s Careers Leader is Assistant Principal, Mrs Oulton, and she can be contacted by email at  or by telephone on 01928 711643, Monday to Friday, if you have any questions related to CEIAG or you wish to access further information about OBA’s Careers Programme. Our qualified Careers Adviser is Siân Woods who can be contacted by email at three days a week.  Siân, who works for MPloy Solutions, holds 1:1 Careers Guidance sessions with students and provides them with expert and impartial advice on the range of opportunities available to them.  This is then followed up with an Individual Action Plan, which will be given to both students and parents/carers, so that further research can be carried out independently on the internet.

The dates that Siân is available are displayed on the Careers noticeboard, outside the Careers Hub and on Tutor Group noticeboards.

Appointments with Siân are arranged by Mrs Oulton but, if required, Siân can also be contacted by email.

Our Careers Advisor is also present at relevant key events in OBA. She attends Year 8 Options Evening and Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 Progress Evenings and is also present at GCSE and A Level Results Days to give advice and guidance to both students and their parents regarding grades achieved and next steps.
In addition, she is available after school three nights a week in The Careers Hub, if students would like additional advice or support.


The Eight Gatsby Benchmarks

OBA’s CEIAG programme runs throughout every year group and it is embedded in the Academy’s curriculum. We link our careers education information and guidance to the Gatsby Benchmarks which have been explicitly referenced throughout the DfE’s Careers Strategy (December 2017) and the new Statutory Guidance for careers (January 2018). These 8 benchmarks out lined below:

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers

5. Encounters with employers and employees

6. Experiences of workplaces

7. Encounters with further and higher education

8. Personal guidance


Meeting the Eight Gatsby Benchmarks

OBA works with Mploy Solutions and a range of other external providers to meet each of these benchmarks:

1. A stable careers programme

Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by pupils, parents, teachers, governors and employers.

OBA’s careers programme has strong backing from the Principal, Senior Leaders and The Governing Body. It is embedded into the structures of the Academy and is regularly being reviewed and developed to meet the needs of students. The annual careers plan includes priorities from the overall Academy Development Plan. This makes it easier to evaluate the achievements of the programme at the end of each year. Students, parents, teachers and employers provide evaluative feedback on their participation in activities via questionnaires and this is used to inform decisions about the future development of the programme and feeds into the whole-school process of evaluation.


2. Learning from career and labour market information

Every pupil, and their parents should have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make best use of available information.

During ECM time each year group follows a tailored careers education programme. This includes information on different careers, information on how to seek careers, applications, interviews and the skills needed in the work place. In addition, we use UNIFROG and U-Explore which students and parents can access both in school and at home. They give advice about careers and qualifications and also have information about live apprenticeships which students can apply for. Students also regularly receive information from the Careers Leader, via email, about available apprenticeships that have been highlighted by Halton’s Careers Team.  An evening is also planned with a focus on applications for university.

3. Addressing the needs of each pupil.

Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each pupil. A schools careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.

The ECM programme is tailored to different year groups in order to ensure it is age appropriate. In addition to this all students complete a careers aspirations form. These are then analysed by the Careers Leader and Adviser at the appropriate time to help plan future events to address students’ requests, where possible. This allows sessions to be tailored to students needs and ensure they complete experiences linked to their own interests and future plans.  SEND and Pupil Premium students are given extra support to complete application forms and plan their next steps, as required.

4. Linking curriculum learning to careers.

All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.

In lesson planning and during Careers Week, in particular, subjects complete lessons based around careers in their subject. E.g. careers in Science. This gives students an insight into the different careers they could go into using each of their qualifications. There is also a focus in the newsletter on a different career option each week including relevant qualifications required. Subject areas are encouraged to run a mini Careers Fair focusing on careers related to their subject and this enables students to value the importance of subjects and how they link to future aspirations.

5. Encounters with employers and employees.

Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.

During ECM and Project Days and Careers Fairs students work with a range of employers and employees to give them knowledge about the workplace. One example includes completing the Barclays Life skills workshops with employees from Barclays. During the workshops students learnt about People Skills, Money Skills and Work Skills. They can also speak to the Barclays representatives about their roles and the range of careers available. This is just one example, however extensive links have been made with a number of employers and employees.  OBA’s Business in the Community Link is Isover Saint-Gobain, based in Runcorn, and we have strong links with this company and regular support both as a whole school and for individuals on work placements or work experience.

6. Experiences of workplaces.

Every pupil should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.

Very valuable curriculum time is dedicated to Work Experience placements in the summer term for both Year 10 and Year 12. These take place for one week and have been highly successful.  Students develop many employability skills, they have to work out transport routes and arrangements, which can often take them out of their comfort zone.  Many students have even secured part-time jobs as a result of this experience.


7. Encounters with further and higher education.

All pupils should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.

Students in all year groups will have access to either a visit to a local university or will have a Careers University Fair.  Mploy Solutions and Halton LA provide information on apprentices and vocational routes into further and higher education.

8. Personal guidance.

Every pupil should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a career adviser, who could be internal or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. They should be expected for all pupils but should be timed to meet their individual needs.

Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 have at least one 1:1 guidance session with the school Careers Adviser. All Year 11 and 13 students also receive a 1:1 interview with either the Principal, the Associate Vice Principal or Head of Year to ensure that they have high aspirations and are applying for the most suitable courses.


Even though Year 7 students might think that decisions regarding their future are many years ahead, all students have an introductory assembly about the importance of developing Transferable Employability Skills, even at the age of 11 or 12.  They are involved in a number of Enterprise Projects via or OBA’s very rich ECM programme and Impact Days where they begin to explore the skills employers are looking for and involve themselves in activities to gain experience and develop an understanding of these crucial skills. Students are introduced to the online careers information available to them and begin to learn more about the vast amount of possible career routes both via the curriculum and the weekly newsletter which is available on OBA’s website and is emailed to parents.


The good work introduced by Form Tutors and Subject Teachers in Year 7 is then built on further in Year 8 and students go on to investigate further possible career routes and explore further the skills and qualities required in different occupations. They consider stereotyping and the importance of equal opportunities and a Year 8 Careers Fair is delivered for students and parents to assist in Option Choices.  Students also begin to have an understanding of a range of local businesses; they develop links with them and receive advice and constructive criticism from them following presentations in assemblies.


In Year 9, further understanding and embedding of key employability skills takes place by external providers.  A variety of projects to develop Enterprise Skills take place and exploring post 16 opportunities and CV preparation start to gain a higher profile. Students are introduced in assemblies to employees from local businesses to help them begin their planning for their work experience placement in Year 10.


In Year 10, as well as the ECM programme and Impact days offering students many opportunities to develop the skills learnt in Years 7-9, they begin to prepare for their week’s Work Experience placement. The aim of this valuable week is to give students first-hand experience of the world of work. A huge range of links with business and industry are set up by Mploy Solutions, which is a major provider of Work Experience Placements for schools in the North West of England.  A Work Experience meeting for parents/carers will take place early in the Autumn term and students are fully prepared for their placement through planned careers lessons during ECM time and assemblies.


All Year 11 students have a 1:1 Careers Guidance Session with the Careers Adviser who offers each individual expert and impartial advice about the routes of further study and apprenticeships available to them. A Careers Fair is held for all students and they have the opportunity to speak to various professionals and organisations, in order to help with their post 16 choices. Students are invited to attend workshops and presentations with outside speakers regarding various post 16 routes.  In addition, each student will have at least one 1:1 careers meeting with either the Principal, Vice Principal, an Assistant Principal or a Head of Year.


In Year 12 all students have a 1:1 interview with the Careers Adviser and Form Tutors offered structured support via an on-line programme called Unifrog. All students also begin to keep a ‘Soft Skills Passport’ which will help them build up, develop further and log a range of transferable skills required by both universities and employers.  A number of CEIAG assemblies also develop their thinking as they begin to prepare for a week’s Work Experience, which may link in with the Key Stage 5 curriculum options that they have chosen. A Work Experience meeting for parents/carers will take place early in the Autumn term so that students are fully prepared for their placement and there will be further follow-up and support via tutorials and assemblies.

Alongside this runs a package of support regarding university aspirations and a variety of university and outside speakers attend to offer first hand advice on the best way to pursue and apply for Higher Education courses.

In Year 13, The Sixth Form Team make further recommendations for further 1:1 guidance sessions with the Careers Adviser and students are given the opportunity to have a mock interview with local businesses.  Students following vocational courses in the Sixth Form also develop links with local businesses, with some spending curriculum time in the work place.

Measuring the success of our Careers Programme

OBA measures and assesses the success of its Careers Programme in the following ways:

  • By using the Careers and Enterprise Company’s Compass Tool.  This is a tool for schools and colleges in England, that quickly and easily helps us to evaluate our careers activity against the Eight Gatsby Benchmarks.  This means that we are constantly comparing what we do against the best national practice.  The tool was built in partnership with the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, to help us to easily discover our strengths and find areas for improvement. Once completed, the tool  provides us with a confidential report and ideas to help you achieve the best for our students in relation to each benchmark.
