On the 29th September Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy held its first ever STEM careers fair for KS4 and KS5 pupils. We were lucky enough to have volunteers from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics backgrounds on the day which gave our pupils a real insight into a STEM related career.
The STEM ambassadors came from industry and academia. Careers that were represented include Engineers with both materials, and construction backgrounds, Medical Statistician, Cardiac Nurse, Hospital Pharmacist, Drug Discovery Scientist and Theoretical Particle Physicist. We were also fortunate to have a researcher from the world of nuclear decommissioning as well as local companies including Mexichem Fluor and AstraZeneca.
Groups of pupils attended the careers fair throughout the day and perused the stalls at their leisure. There was some great discussion between pupils and ambassadors which was inspiring to hear and confirmed this was a valuable event for our OBA students.
‘Thank you very much for letting me visit your school yesterday. It was a real pleasure to meet such confident and enthusiastic pupils. I appreciate that a career in science isn’t going to suit everyone and yet each pupil I spoke to was kind enough to listen to me as I described what I did. They were all very polite too which is lovely to see.
Congratulations go to yourself for organising a successful day and to the school as a whole for providing a lovely and encouraging working environment.’
Laura Bonnett – Medical Statistician
‘Thank you for the successful organisation of the event. It was the first one of this sort for me and I certainly enjoyed it and learned a lot myself.’
Thomas Teubner – Theoretical Particle Physicist
I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed meeting up with you today, and having the chance to chat with many of the students. I always enjoy such events as it gives me the chance of talking to the new generation of young adults.
So overall this was a great day, well organised and very enjoyable.
