On the 18th January 2011 Year 9 and Year 10 Business pupils visited Manchester Airport to discover more about the business of the airport. The day started with a guided tour around one of the three departure terminals. This included a visit to the terminal roof to look out over the terminal runways and the planes that were grounded awaiting takeoff – quite a noisy experience! We heard about the importing and exporting of cargo as well as passengers. After a quick break for lunch we took the short journey to the Manchester Airport Viewing Park, the home of the Concorde, Nimrod and many other aircrafts.
Aboard a retired Monarch DC10 aircraft we listened to an informative presentation about the Manchester Airport Group as a public limited company and how it operates as a business. This helped the pupils to apply their knowledge of business organisations following their study of the BTEC Business unit 1 on business purposes and structures of organisations. Following the presentation we were able to explore the outside of the Concorde at the Viewing Park within a display hangar while hearing some interesting stories of some famous passengers and their demands!
An all round enjoyable experience!
